The downtown River Walk sits below street level in many places. A destination that looks close on a map can still require a staircase, ramp, elevator, or bridge. Save both the venue address and a nearby street-level landmark before you leave.
Use neighborhoods as anchors
Downtown is easiest to understand in pieces. La Villita sits beside the river and gives you a compact historic district. Alamo Plaza is a useful street-level reference northeast of the main bend. Commerce and St Mary's streets help orient the central stretch.
Do not race the route
The appeal is in the transitions. Build in time to find the correct river-level entrance, cross bridges, and stop when a view earns it.
Plan for the pace you actually enjoy.
An early evening makes wayfinding easier and gives you a chance to see the river change as the lights come on. Later starts can feel livelier, but downtown movement and venue entry may take longer.

Start in La Villita, meet the river near the central bend, and finish near St Mary's Street. Good when the group wants less distance and more time at each stop.
Commerce to La Villita
Use Commerce Street as the arrival point, descend to the river, then work south toward La Villita before returning to the central bend.
An evening across several stops
Choose a hosted route when you want the transitions handled and several venues considered together. Exact stops and sequence should be confirmed for the date.
